ASKED QUESTIONS:
TUITION EXCHANGE
|
|
| The
Tuition Exchange Program is a partnership of 580 colleges and universities
offering competitive tuition exchange scholarships to eligible dependents
of faculty and staff from member institutions. Scholarships are not
fringe benefits; they are competitive awards. Member institutions
are required to maintain an approximate exchange balance for the number
of students receiving tuition exchange scholarships at other institutions
(exports) and the number of students awarded tuition exchange scholarships
by the host institution (imports). Each member institution develops
its own guidelines and policies regarding: |
- Who is entitled
to be sent out on the exchange from their institution.
|
- How they
award the scholarships to incoming students.

Q1.
Who is eligible?
|
| Dependent
children of eligible Syracuse University employees as determined by
the Office of Human Resources. Students must meet all academic and
admission requirements, and be matriculated in a program of study
leading to their first baccalaureate degree. |
| |
| Q2.
How many years can my dependent receive sponsorship by Syracuse University?
|
| Dependents
of Syracuse University employees are sponsored for this benefit for
a maximum of four years (8 semesters, or 12 quarters) of full-time
undergraduate study. Summer sessions are excluded from this scholarship.
|
| |
Q3.
How do I know if my dependent is eligible?
|
| General
information is available online at http://humanresources.syr.edu/benefits/DepTuitionBenefit.html.
If you have additional questions regarding eligibility, you may e-mail
hrservice@syr.edu in the Office
of Human Resources or telephone 443-4042. |
| |
| Q4.
What schools are on the list? |
| The
most comprehensive and current listing is on The Tuition Exchange
web site at http://tuitionexchange.org/.
You are also welcome to visit the Office of Scholarship Programs in
216 Archbold North for a copy or call us at 443-1513. |
| |
| Q5.
If I am an eligible employee, is my dependent guaranteed a tuition
exchange scholarship? |
| No,
your benefit allows your dependent the opportunity to apply for the
scholarship. The number of scholarships offered and the criteria used
for the selection of recipients are solely up to each member institution.
|
| |
| Q6.
What does the scholarship cover? |
| The
actual dollar value is determined by the tuition charged by the host
college. Most scholarships cover full tuition. However, any school
that charges more than the minimum set by The Tuition Exchange, Inc.
($26,800 for 2008-2009) may opt to award the minimum amount. Student
fees, course fees, course overloads, and room and board are not covered.
|
| |
| Q7.
Are there any restrictions placed on a tuition exchange scholarship
by the host institution? |
| Full
time enrollment is a definite requirement. Most schools also have
a minimum GPA for renewal and students may be required to file for
federal and state aid. Some schools limit the scholarship to two years
(4 semesters, 6 quarters) and/or they may require the student to live
on campus. We strongly encourage families to contact each school they
are interested in applying to for details. |
| |
| Q8.
I am overwhelmed! Where do I begin? |
| Review
the list. We encourage employees to contact our office via e-mail
at scholar@syr.edu to request
the names of tuition exchange liaison officers of any schools they
may be interested in to find out the specifics of their program. We
will be happy to supply you with a list of suggested questions to
ask. Parents and students need to be well informed of how competitive
the scholarships are before applying for admission. |
| |
| Q9.
When should I apply? |
| DO
NOT WAIT UNTIL THE STUDENT HAS BEEN ADMITTED. Many
schools have early deadlines for receiving tuition exchange applications.
The best time to apply for a Tuition Exchange Scholarship is at the
same time you apply for admission. This is usually in the late fall
of the dependent's senior year of high school. Remember that applying
for admission, and applying for a tuition exchange scholarship are
two separate processes! |
| |
| Q10.
Where
do I get the paperwork to apply?
|
| Contact
hrservic@syr.edu in the Office
of Human Resources to request an application packet. Return all required
documentation and the completed application to the Office of Human
Resources. To avoid unnecessary delays, please fill out the forms
completely. |
|
| Q11.
Who sends out the scholarship applications? |
| Once
Human Resources certifies eligibility, the tuition exchange application
will be forwarded to the Office of Scholarship Programs for processing.
The applications are forwarded from this office, and notification
letters are sent to the students at their permanent address. |
|
| Q12.
When will I find out if my dependent received a scholarship? |
It
varies by institution. Many schools notify the student shortly after
admission; some schools may wait until April 1. It is best to contact
the host institution directly with questions like this.
|
|
| Q13.
My dependent received a scholarship offer! What do I do now? |
| Congratulations!
Now you must accept or reject the offer within the guidelines and
deadlines of that school. We strongly encourage students to contact
each and every school they have applied to as soon as their decision
is made. If the student is awarded a scholarship at more than one
school it is very important for the school to know if the student
will accept or not. Many schools are limited in the number of scholarships
they are able to award and are forced to put students on a waiting
list. |
|
| Q14.
Who do I contact here at the university for more information? |
| Call
Judy Minns in the Office of Scholarship Programs at 443-2593, or e-mail
scholar@syr.edu. |
