FINANCIAL AID TIMELINE
FOR STUDENTS ENTERING IN FALL 2008
(2008-2009)
 
October 2007
  • Get organized! Begin an Admissions and Financial Aid folder to compile all the important paperwork you will receive.
  • CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE is available at www.collegeboard.com for the 2008-2009 year.
  • Visit campus for Fall Receptions sponsored by the Office of Admissions.
 
November 2007
  • November 30- Early Decision student CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE deadline.
 
December 2007
  • File CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE - Regular Decision students begin filing the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE at www.collegeboard.com.
 
January 2008
  • Mid- January - Merit scholarship notification sent to Early Decision students.
  • Mid- January - Financial Aid award notices are sent to Early Decision Students.
  • Get a PIN - Both parents and students should apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN) at www.pin.ed.gov. A PIN is required when filing the FAFSA online and will be used as your electronic signature.
  • January 1 - FAFSA now available - Begin applying for 2007-2008 financial aid by filing FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Assistance in filing these forms is available at your high school guidance office, by calling the Dept. of Ed at 1-800-4-FED-AID or by visiting your college's financial aid office.
  • NYS TAP - New York State residents file for the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) online when filing FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov .
  • Scholarship Search - Begin your external scholarship search- the Office of Scholarship Programs suggests you visit www.fastweb.com.
 
February 2008
  • February 1 - Early Decision, Regular Decision and Transfer student FAFSA deadline.
  • February 1 - Regular Decision and Transfer student CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE deadline.
 
March 2008
  • Mid- March - Regular Decision and Transfer student merit award notices sent.
  • Late March - Regular Decision and Transfer student financial aid award notices sent.
 
April 2008
  • April 20 - Deadline to submit Income and Tax documentation (as explained in the award notice publication), if requested by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Programs.
  • Submit monthly payment plan application to Bursar’s Office, if interested.
  • Federal Stafford Loan borrowers complete:
    1. Entrance interview
    2. Don't forget to check your Task List on your FA Portfolio to view any outstanding tasks.
  • Admitted students visit campus for Spring Receptions sponsored by the Office of Admissions.
 
May 2008
  • May 1 - Tuition / intent to register deposit deadline.
  • PLUS Loan - Parents can begin to complete the Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) application. Click for more information on the PLUS Loan process.
  • Perkins Loan - Federal Perkins Loan borrowers will receive instructions to sign the Perkins Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN).
 
June 2008
  • June 1 - PLUS Loan, Stafford Loan, Perkins Loan application deadline, if you wish these funds to appear on your July Bursar bill.
  • June 1 - Bursar Payment Plan application deadline.
  • Activate your “syr.edu” email account after you receive confirmation from Information Technology & Services (ITS).
 
July 2008
  • Early-July - Sibling in College grant recipients receive instructions to complete the sibling enrollment verification form.
  • July 28 - Fall semester bill (Pre-bill) due to Bursar’s Office, if not already on the payment plan.
  • Notify the Office of Scholarship Programs of any outside scholarships you will be receiving.
 
 
August 2008
  • August 1 - Final deadline to complete the Federal Stafford or Perkins Loan E-MPN, otherwise your loan will be cancelled. Go to your FA Portfolio on myslice.syr.edu to complete these tasks.
  • August 15 - Deadline for Sibling in College Enrollment Verification Form, if applicable.
  • Federal Stafford Loan approvals (disclosure statements) are sent to students from lenders.
  • August 15 - Financial aid funds credited to student accounts.
  • August 23 - 24 - Opening Weekend: Welcome to SU!
  • Bursar bills are due in full prior to the first day of classes, if not already on the payment plan.
  • August 25 - First day of classes.
  • Notify the Office of Scholarship Programs of any outside scholarships you will be receiving. Complete the Educational Resource Reporting Form task on your FA Portfolio if you are receiving an outside scholarship.
  • Federal Work-Study (FWS) recipients search for jobs on the Student Employment Office web site.
 
September 2008
  • Mid-September - Last day to drop classes without a financial penalty (usually 3 weeks after classes begin).
