OPPORTUNITY PROGRAMS


Over 500 students are enrolled in “Opportunity Programs” administered by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Programs. Program eligibility is determined upon initial enrollment at Syracuse University. Each program has specific student eligibility criteria and unique financial aid protocols, however all students must be admissible to the University under the prevailing admissions criteria. In addition to institutional grants and scholarships, all students receive federal and state aid for which they demonstrate eligibility. The following are brief descriptions of the programs SU offers:



Bergen Record Journalism Program - Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in collaboration with the management of the Bergen Record, a daily newspaper located in Bergen, New Jersey, have developed this program to attract students to careers in journalism. Students are recruited from over 100 New Jersey area high schools. The program gives students a hands-on preview of college level journalism education through a workshop format and reinforces career interest through summer and ultimately permanent employment with the Record. Syracuse University meets the full financial need of every Bergen Record Student.


High School for Leadership and Public Service (HSLAPS) - Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship in collaboration with the New York City Board of Education developed HSLAPS for high school students. The goal is to develop a generation of leaders from urban areas by providing a rigorous academic curriculum and opportunities for leadership and public service. Syracuse University meets the full financial need of these students.


Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection - The Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection is a program established in 1987 with the mission of increasing the graduation rate, college attendance rate and employability of high school students within the Rochester and Syracuse N.Y. city school districts. This is accomplished through the provision of support services, mentoring/advocacy, enrichment activities and employment training and placement services to students. Beginning with the 2004-05 academic year, Syracuse University will meet the full financial need of students who have participated in the program.


KidsWin! - A Syracuse based organization, Kids Win! provides a variety of support services and is affiliated with Catholic Charties. This program primarily serves low income families through an outreach network based in more than 15 community centers (Southwest Community Center, Dunbar Center, etc).

Kids Win! students will be identified through the Office of Admissions. Program participants are expected to meet all standard admission and financial aid requirements. Syracuse University has agreed to supply a full need package for Kids Win!. Specifically we have agreed that in conjunction with Federal Pell Grant and NYS TAP award, and SU grant the student would have at least full tuition. These students may also qualify and be admitted into other Opportunity Programs (HEOP, Syracuse Challenge, SSSP, etc) and will be aided under the existing aid protocols of those programs.


On Point for College - Beginning in 2008, On Point for College and Syracuse University have entered into a collaborative agreement to enhance community outreach and college opportunity program for students in the city of Syracuse.

On Point for College provides a wide range of access and support services for prospective college students at 15 community centers in the inner-city of Syracuse. These sites include: Catholic Charities Centers, Boys and Girls Clubs, Southwest Community Center, Dunbar Center, Syracuse Housing Authority, Rescue Mission's Barnabas House for homeless youth, Center for Community Alternatives, and Sidney Johnson Center. Students are given guidance on the college selection process, applying for financial aid and information on special opportunity programs such as NYS Higher Education Opportunity Programs (HEOP) and the Syracuse University Student Support Service Programs (SSSP). In addition, On Point for College guides students through formal campus visitation opportunities and basic transitional support by providing students with backpacks, college supplies, bedding for the residence hall as well as a $150 stipend for clothing. Limited Last Dollar Grants are available for room deposits, enrollment deposits, and textbooks. The On Point for Jobs Program helps students link with summer internships and permanent jobs.

On Point for College students that are admitted to Syracuse University through the regular admissions program will be awarded preferential financial assistance to attend. Syracuse University will fund the student with a financial aid package that meets the full financial need of the student. Students from low income families will be assured that the full cost of tuition and fees will be covered through available grants and Syracuse University resources; support for room and board will also be available to qualified resident students. These students may also qualify and be admitted into other Opportunity Programs (HEOP, Syracuse Challenge, SSSP, etc) and will be aided under the existing aid protocols of those programs and be eligible to receive targeted counseling and support services.


Operation Link-Up (OLU) - This program, established by Operation Link-Up, Inc. in Patterson NJ, encourages students to stay in high school with the goal of attending college through mentoring, tutoring and other services. Students attending John F. Kennedy, Eastside and Rosa Parks High Schools in Patterson, NJ who have participated in the Operation Link-Up program may qualify. Syracuse University meets the full financial need of these students.


Schomburg Student Assistance Program - This is a cooperative arrangement between Syracuse University and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York City. The program is designed to enhance the educational opportunities of students participating in the Schomburg Center's Junior Scholars Program. Participating students who are referred to the program director are eligible to receive enhanced financial aid awards that will meet the student's full financial need.


SUmmerStart - Sponsored by the Division of Student Support and Retention, the SummerStart program is a pre-freshman academic program offered during the second summer session, designed to provide a smooth transition from high school to college. The curriculum includes college level and developmental courses, as well as counseling, advising and academic support services. Students are awarded grants to assist with the cost of the program.


Syracuse Challenge - The Syracuse Challenge is a program co-developed by the Syracuse City School District and Syracuse University. A student enters into an agreement with the school district in the 8th grade and agrees to: earn a NY State Regents Diploma with advanced designation, maintain an 85% average for each year in high school, and achieve an SAT combined score of at least 1100 (critical reasoning and math) or ACT composite score of at least 23. Students who successfully meet the criteria are guaranteed admission into The College of Arts and Sciences (but may be admitted into other colleges if qualified) and are guaranteed an individualized financial package based on family financial circumstances, to ensure that enrollment at Syracuse University is affordable.


Syracuse University Co-Generation Scholarship - This scholarship was designed to provide selected students in the neighboring University community bounded by South Salina St., East Castle St., Renwick Ave. and East Adams St. the financial resources that would enable them to receive a quality education. Students receive full tuition, fees, room and board and a book allowance.


Student SUccess Initiative (SSUI- formerly the Syracuse Academic Improvement Program/SAIP) - SSUI is a summer residential support program for undergraduates who are not meeting academic expectations. Students are provided a reduced cost for tuition, room and board, as well as academic support groups and structured academic and social programming. Students are awarded a combination of grant and loan funds to cover the cost of the program.


UC HEOP Transfer - This program was established to assist Continuing Education/University College Higher Educational Opportunity Program (HEOP) students who wish to transfer to Syracuse University’s main campus and study full-time. Students who are unable to be admitted into the Main Campus Arthur O. Eve HEOP Program due to full enrollment and who have earned a significant number of credits during part-time study can be considered for this program. The cost of tuition and fees is met and an additional $1,000 is given for book expenses, primarily from University, federal and state grants.
