TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID

The information below pertains to your financial aid award notice and lists the types of Financial Aid that Syracuse University offers. Your financial aid award notice may consist of one or more of the following:

  • Syracuse University Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded to students at the time of admission to recognize prior academic achievement. University-funded scholarships include the Founders' Scholarship, Chancellor's Scholarship and Dean's Scholarship.
  • Syracuse University Grant
Syracuse University Grants are awarded to students based on financial need and do not have to be repaid. Students must apply for financial aid each year by completing the required applications and must demonstrate financial need.
  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
This is a federal grant awarded to students showing exceptional financial need and does not have to be repaid. Eligibility and amount are determined annually, based on federal criteria and availability of funds.
  • Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)
The U.S. Department of Education has created a federal grant program, called the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG). Up to $750 will be awarded to eligible first year students and up to $1,300 to eligible second year students. By filing the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA), you are automatically considered for federal ACG eligibility. For more information, visit our ACG Grant page.
  • Science and Mathmatics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART)
The U.S. Department of Education has created a federal grant program, called the Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART). Up to $4,000 will be awarded to eligible juniors and seniors. By filing the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA), you are automatically considered for federal SMART eligibility. For more information, visit our SMART Grant page.
  • Federal Pell Grant
The Federal Pell Grant is awarded to students demonstrating exceptional financial need and does not have to be repaid. Eligibility and amount are determined annually, based on federal criteria.
  • Federal Work-Study (FWS)
A Federal Work-Study award represents the amount that a student may earn through the work-study program. A Federal Work-Study award does not appear as a credit on a student's Bursar bill. A student receives a weekly paycheck for the hours actually worked.
  • Federal Perkins Loan
This is a low-interest federal loan awarded to students showing significant financial need. The Federal Perkins Loan must be repaid, with interest. Interest is not charged while a student is enrolled full-time.
  • Federal Stafford Loan
The Federal Stafford Loan must be repaid, with interest. The amount you may receive for the academic year is based on the number of credits you have completed. A Stafford Loan may be subsidized, unsubsidized, or a combination of the two.

A subsidized Federal Stafford Loan is based on need, and interest is not charged until after a student leaves school. An unsubsidized loan is not based on need and interest is charged from the time the funds are disbursed. The interest may be deferred, however, it will be capitalized (added to the principal amount).
  • New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)
The New York State Tuition Assistance Program is a grant program administered by the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC). All students who are residents of New York State and who complete a FAFSA will receive information directly from HESC regarding eligibility.
