FEDERAL PARENT PLUS APPLICATION PROCESS FOR:

  • Parents who have borrowed a prior PLUS Loan at SU
    AND
  • are using the same lender for the new loan
    AND
  • are borrowing on behalf of the same son/daughter as in prior loans
Before you Borrow
  • Use your student's Financial Aid Portfolio to determine how much to borrow.
  • You will be asked for your lender’s name and 6 digit lender code from your prior loan. If you are unsure of your lender, view your prior year MPN on the HESC web site by selecting “view/print PLUS e-MPN.” Make note of your lender and lender code.
Application Process
Since you already have a valid MPN on file, you will not need to do another. However, you will need to indicate an amount to borrow and a timeframe for your loan. If your prior credit check has expired (it is good for 180 days), you will need to complete another one.

(Note: If your prior PLUS loans are through a lender that does not work with HESC, please complete our Non-standard PLUS Request Form instead of the following steps).

Complete your renewal application online at NYSHESC.

You may use the instructions below as you go through the process:

HESC Step 1 - CONSENT TO BORROWER AUTHENTICATION
You will need your HESC PIN to complete the e-MPN. You cannot use your student’s PIN. You will be given instructions if you do not remember your PIN.

HESC Step 2 - ENTER AND CONFIRM BORROWER INFORMATION
You will be asked to data enter your address, phone number, and driver’s license information

HESC Step 3 - SELECT SCHOOL
  1. Select the terms that you would like your loan to cover
** Tip – We recommend that you select Fall ’09– Spring ’10. The amount that you borrow will be evenly split between the fall and spring semesters.
  2. Select Syracuse University as the school you will be attending.
If you do not select Syracuse University, we will not receive your application!
** Tip – Select “S”, then scroll down to the very bottom of the list.
Syracuse University (school code 00288200) is the very last school listed.
HESC Step 4 - SELECT AND CONFIRM LENDER
Select your lender from the drop-down box
  • Tip – Be sure that the name AND code match your lender from last year! (Many lenders have multiple codes, so it is important that you use the correct one). If you are unsure of your lender, view your prior year MPN and select “view/print PLUS e-MPN.” Make note of your lender and lender code.
  • What if my lender isn't listed in the HESC MPN lender drop-down box?
If your prior PLUS loans are through a lender that does not work with HESC, please complete our Non-standard PLUS Request Form.

HESC Step 5 - CONSENT TO CREDIT CHECK
If your lender allows NYS HESC to perform a pre-screen credit check, it will occur here. Check the “consent” box and click Continue. If your lender does not allow a pre-credit check, you will proceed to Step 8.

HESC Step 6 - REVIEW CREDIT CHECK RESULTS
  • If you are credit approved, then you will proceed to Step 8.
  • If you are credit denied, you will be asked if you would like your student to receive additional Unsubsidized Stafford loan funds instead (up to $4,000 for Freshmen/Sophomores or $5,000 for Juniors/Seniors). Once you make your selection, you should click “continue” to submit your answer but then exit the application. You do not need to proceed with the PLUS application.
HESC Step 7 - SELECT DATA
HESC Step 8 - COMPLETE AND CONFIRM REQUESTED LOAN AMOUNT
Enter the amount of PLUS loan that you would like to borrow. If you applied for the full aid year (Fall-Spring terms), this amount will be split in half among the Fall and Spring terms.

Once you have submitted your requested amount and loan period, NYS HESC will match your credit approval with your e-MPN already on file from prior loans, and you will be informed that your application process is complete.

What happens next? - Go to Step 2
