SUMMER FINANCIAL AID

The
Syracuse University Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Programs
has a limited financial aid program (Federal and Alternative loans)
for undergraduate students who enroll for at least 6 credit hours
during one or more of the summer sessions.

Eligibility
Criteria
|
| To
be considered for financial aid for the summer you must: |
- Have the
2008-09 FAFSA on file.
- Be matriculated
in a program leading to a degree, certificate or diploma at Syracuse
University.
- Be a U.S.
Citizen or eligible non-citizen.
- Be enrolled
for 6 or more credit hours for the summer at Syracuse University.
- If you will
be registering for 12 or more credit hours and are a main campus
matriculated full-time undergraduate, you may be eligible for
the Summer Scholar Incentive Program. Click

- Not be in
default on any previous federal student loan or grant program.

| The
maximum amount you may borrow through the Federal Stafford Loan program
for the summer term is based on your academic level. |

Student's loan
eligibility is determined by the number of credits for which you
are enrolled and the number of weeks that you will be attending
summer sessions. Students may borrow up to the cost of tuition ($895
per credit hour) plus approximately $350 per week for living expenses
during summer enrollment. |

Applying
for a Federal Stafford Loan
|
- By completing
the FAFSA and the Syracuse University Undergraduate Summer Financial
Aid Application (via your Task List on your Portfolio) you are
applying for the Federal Stafford Loan. After the Office of Financial
Aid and Scholarship Programs certifies your loan eligibility you
will be emailed a Financial Aid Award Notice to your syr.edu email
address.
- Once you
receive this notice, check the Task Tab on your Summer 2009 Financial
Aid Portfolio at myslice.syr.edu.
Any additional forms that you need to complete (such as Federal
Stafford Promissory Note) will be listed there.
- Please note-
you cannot rollover your summer charges to the fall 2009 semester.

Other
Loan Programs
|
Parents
of dependent undergraduate students may be eligible to borrow a Federal
PLUS Loan. For instructions on how to apply for a summer Parent PLUS
loan, please click here.
If the parent is denied the Federal PLUS Loan, students may be eligible
for additional unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan funds.
Students who are certified for the maximum Federal Stafford Loan,
but are still eligible for financial assistance, may apply for an
Alternative Loan. To
apply for an Alternative Loan for the summer, you must complete the
SU Summer Financial Aid Application (see below) AND the Alternative
Loan Application provided by your lender. For

Important
Reminders
|
- You must
be registered for at least 6 credit hours at Syracuse University
before your loan funds will be released to Syracuse University.
- Students
may not receive more than the maximum loan amount, even if they
enroll in MAYmester and both summer sessions.
- Summer student
loans are disbursed in the beginning of the enrollment period.
- If you are
due a refund from your loan, you must request it from the Bursar’s
Office or online at myslice.syr.edu
after your classes begin.
- Loans borrowed
for the summer will not affect academic year eligibility, however
the loan will be applied towards the total aggregate limit of
$23,000.
- To ensure
that your loan funds arrive at the beginning of the summer semester,
complete this application at least 3 weeks before your program
begins.
- You may apply
up until the last week of the summer session you attend. Applications
received after the end of your enrollment period cannot be processed.
- You will
not receive a summer bill. Please check online at myslice
for your bursar charges and expected financial aid beginning June
1st.

Financial Aid Application Process
|
Step
1: All students must complete a 2008-2009 Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by May 1, 2009. The FAFSA may be
completed on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. |

2: Complete the 2009 Undergraduate Summer Financial Aid
Application which is available on your Task List on your Financial
Aid Portfolio on Myslice. |

| Step
3: Returning
students should register online at http://myslice.syr.edu.
Please call (315) 443-4135 for more registration information. Please
note: Students may also register using the mail, fax or walk in options. |

New
students must use the mail, fax or walk in options for
their first registration. If you plan to register by mail, fax
or walk in, you must make arrangements to pay
tuition and fees at the time you register.

SUccess Initiative (SSUI) students - Contact
the SSUI Office for application and registration instructions,
700 University Ave, Room 407.
Students that are
admitted to SSUI and registered will have their financial aid automatically
processed. You will only need to e-mail the Financial Aid Office at
finmail@syr.edu if you would
like to reduce or cancel your Federal Stafford Loan. |
