FINANCIAL AID FOR
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

International students are not eligible for federally funded financial aid administered by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship programs and therefore should not submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). An international student is a non-resident alien on a non-immigrant visa which permits full time study in the United States. A student must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen (permanent resident) to receive federal financial aid. Please note: Students who have a "Notice of Approval to Apply for Permanent Residence" (Forms I-171 or I-464) or an "Application for Voluntary Departure Under the Family Unity Program" (Form I-797) are NOT eligible for federal financial aid.

Graduate Students: All merit awards, which are grants, scholarships, assistantships and fellowships, are offered to international students by the academic departments and programs. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Programs does not administer merit awards. We recommend that you contact the specific academic program to inquire about these type of awards. If you do not know the academic department or program, you may contact the Graduate Enrollment Management Center for this information at grad@syr.edu.

Undergraduate Students: Undergraduate international students are eligible to receive merit and competitive scholarships from Syracuse University. Students are selected for merit scholarships by the Admissions Committee at the time of admission to the University. Merit scholarships for entering freshmen are the Founder's ($12,000), Chancellor's ($8,000) and the Dean's ($6,000) scholarships. Merit scholarships for entering transfer students are the Chancellor's ($8,000) and the Dean's ($6,000) scholarships.

In addition, international undergraduate students may compete for and receive competitive scholarships from Syracuse University. These scholarships include the Citizen Education Conference Scholarship, the Remembrance Scholarship, the Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship, and the Special Music Scholarship.

Private (Alternative) Educational Loans

Most alternative (private) educational loans are available to international students if they have a credit-worthy co-signer or co-borrower who is a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. To obtain more information about these loans, please see our alternative loan website.
